
Dr Vivek Thakkar
Associate Professor Vivek Thakkar is a Sydney based rheumatologist with expertise in treating arthritis, gout, pain, autoimmune conditions and osteoporosis.
A/Prof Thakkar has the following key roles and responsibilities:
- Associate Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University
- Program Lead Year 2, Macquarie Medical Program (“Macquarie MD”)
- Staff Specialist at the Liverpool Hospital (where he is involved in the multidisciplinary Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic and Clinical Trials)
- Conjoint Associate Professor, Western Sydney University
- Examiner for The Royal Australasian College of Physicians
- In previous roles, he was the Clinical SubDean of the Macarthur Clinical School, Western Sydney University (from 2013 to 2017), joint year 2 academic course advisor, elected member to the academic senate WSU, co-chair of the Annual Scientific Meeting Program Committee of the Australian Rheumatology Association and Director of Training for the NSW Rheumatology Training Program.
As a Rheumatologist, Associate Professor Thakkar has particular expertise in the following areas:
- Arthritis. There are various types. Common types include Osteoarthritis, Inflammatory Arthritis ( eg Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis) amongst various others;
- Osteoporosis. This is very common, treatable and preventable;
- Autoimmune diseases. The connective tissue disease include Scleroderma, SLE (lupus), Vasculitis, Sarcoidosis and Myositis amongst others;
- Musculoskeletal problems. These include bursitis, pain (back and/or neck, for example), tendinitis, nerve pain and nerve root compression, amongst others;
- Pulmonary Hypertension and Interstitial Lung Disease. Associate Professor Thakkar is an expert in these problems when they are related to autoimmune problems.
